What We Listen: Dig Dis - Remastered 1999/Rudy Van Gelder Edition
Guji Uraga is a high-elevation coffee-growing area in southern Ethiopia, within the broader Guji zone, known for its dense forests and long tradition of smallholder coffee production. Coffees from Uraga are typically grown by many farmers on small plots and processed together at local washing stations. As with most Ethiopian coffees, lots are made up of many native varieties rather than a single identifiable cultivar, and are therefore classified as Ethiopian Landrace. The “G1” designation refers to Grade 1 quality, indicating careful sorting and preparation, and reflects the clean, vibrant profile that Guji Uraga is celebrated for.
Ethiopian Heirloom refers to the diverse group of native coffee varieties grown throughout Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee. Rather than a single identifiable cultivar, “Heirloom” encompasses many indigenous landrace varieties that have evolved naturally over centuries. Genetic research has shown these varieties to be extraordinarily diverse, making Ethiopia home to the world’s richest coffee gene pool. As a result of traditional farming practices and centralized processing, Ethiopian Heirloom coffees are typically composed of multiple varieties, expressing regional character rather than a single genetic line.
